The effects of using feed stock as biomass for biofuel production has without question impacted developing nations. It is estimated that over half of the world's population spend more than 50% of their total income on food. If prices double what are they supposed to do? The mis-information about the benefits of using any food stock to produce biofuel is staggering. Even the Agriculture Secretary of the United States, Edward T. Schafer, denies any significant impact.
(New York Times, May 30)
The truth is it doesn't suit this administration or the greater part of global corporate interests to invest in biomass sources, such as algae, that would make food and fuel less expensive.
The use of algae as the biomass source for refining biofuel is already available. It will only require our government to endorse and subsidize the infrastructure to produce it.
It can be grown and refined re-using most of the water and refining chemicals needed in desert conditions, it consumes 2/3 of its weight in carbon dioxide and the technology exists to grow enough biomass to produce 33,000 gallons of biofuel per acre, per year.
We need to lobby every elected official at any level, any advocates for the environment, human rights, world health and even our neighbors to make this change.
